September 2022
I never really thought the world could actual end, you know like in all those films and books about Armageddon, zombie apocalypse etc.
Well here in the present I am stood on top of a high mountain watching the world end. Surrounded by lava.
It all started 1 week ago, it was a beautiful sunny day the date was the 3rd of September 2022. Heading towards the end of summer, here in Britain we had been baking in the heat. It was the hottest summer that had ever been recorded it was like being in a hot country for months. We were worried that it was never going to rain again.
I was standing in the garden watering my plants with the small amount of water we are allowed to use. In fact we are only allowed to water the plants twice a week. The grass and everything has turned a dried out brown colour. This was the moment I felt it the earth beneath my feet shake, strong enough to make a few tiles fall off the roof and some fences to fall. My neighbours ran out of the house clearly I was not the only one that felt it.
Lately in Europe the news had been reporting small earthquakes nothing major, we had never felt them here. I looked at Twitter on my phone and people all over Britain had felt it. Now sat on the sofa watching the news and it’s not just Britain’s but all over the world are reporting earthquakes small ones and big ones. As the day went on the earthquakes carried on, only minor shakes here. It was a little scary as Britain had never had anything like this. We had a pandemic that ended a few months ago but not earthquakes.
I went to bed that night still feeling shakes beneath my feet. I woke up with a start and a freight at 5am my bedroom was shaking badly and my wardrobe had fallen to the ground. I jumped out of bed and ran to the door and held on tightly to the door frame I could hear things breaking all round the house. From outside I could hear big bangs and I could hear things crashing to the ground. In my house all the windows smashed and then it stopped. I could feel water pooling down my cheeks I was crying, my whole body shaking. I managed to get my slippers and put them on.
I had to climb over things to get out of my house. When I finally got out it was bad and i wished I had stayed inside. Cars flipped, streetlights had fallen down and some of the neighbours roofs had fallen in on my neighbours home. Cracks had appeared in the ground and I could see smoke flowing out of them. I could not see any of my neighbours.
I needed to find my phone and see if I can get to the tv. The house is wrecked but I manage to get to the kitchen, thankfully I charged my phone in there every night. First I call my Mum and Dad but no one answers. I try my sister and still no answer. I look on Twitter but it’s full of panic status updates and my news app is not working. I climb to the tv and put on BBC News, reports of earthquakes of a 7.5 magnitude are being reported across Britain. Reports of people being trapped in rubble in most towns and cracks of lava appearing in the ground. They were telling people to find the highest mountains and climb as high up as they can. They are saying this could just be the start. I switched channels to see what was happening around the world and it was all the same reports.
I wander if my family had already headed to Great Gable in the Lake District my family and I would holiday there. We all had hiking gear as we loved to climb it. I’m in Leeds and it’s almost 3 hours away by car. I rush around the house and start getting as much of my stuff together and pack up my rucksack. I fill half of it with as much food as I can and the rest with clothes. I get dressed in to my hiking gear and head to the car. I set the satnav to the camping site where we stay and I set off.
What was meant to take 3 hours took me 4 days. In that 4 days earthquakes carried on smaller than that big one but enough to make the cracks in the ground larger and most of the cracks now had lave bubbling to the surface my radio and phone had stopped working. People were panicking and the towns I went through were getting ransacked shop windows broken things stolen. People where fighting in the streets and lots of traffic with people trying to get to the mountains and higher grounds. I saw a lot in those 4 days. I saw people fall in the cracks and people combust in the heat. I just drove and drove and stopped at petrol stations if I could. People had fled as fast as they could. I can’t even speak tabout some things I have seen. I just wanted to get to my family.
I made it to the campsite but they were not here, no one was here. I decided maybe they had set off climbing, so I got my stuff and sleeping bag and I set off.
When I got 3 quarters of the way up the world began to shake hard rocks fell past me and trees slipped down in the mud. Giant cracks appeared. I kept climbing till I reached the top.
Here I stand. Watching and feeling the world shake and crack. The shakes become worse and worse. It begun to rain. The rain was hot and burned my skin......
