POEM STARTER

Write an ode to an extinct animal, without ever saying the animal’s name - this rule also applies to the title.

Ode To A Pitiful Creature

Oh, ye feathered creature that shan’t be named

On sweet Mauritius you once waddled and flocked

Far flung and hunted, stalked till extinct - now famed

What’s foolish, obsolete, in your name, are mocked!

Yours is a calamitous, cautionary tale

The Dutch took your forest; rats took your nests

Bringing their predatory predilection upon you by sail

Jesting of your flightless folly, jockeying for your corpulent breasts!

Thy squat frame, feckless, and silly visage, beaked

Were no match for man’s destructive passions

His devouring, reckless; your hapless fate unwreaked

Only Wonderland will have you now — proof that man excedes his rations!
