STORY STARTER

When the fairy’s love spell fades, a family has to deal with the consequences of it.

Broken Vows

I watched as his face changed suddenly. That warm loving look he has always given me changed to cold indifference.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” I asked. We’ve been married for years and he’s never looked at me like this.

“I’m sorry, I’m having trouble placing you. Who exactly are you?” He asked as my brows rose in surprise.

“Very funny, we’ve been married for ten years now.” I laughed, smacking his arm lightly. He took a step back and raised his hands.

“Look, I have no idea who you are or what you want from me. I’m just going to be going now.” He replied as he kept retreating until he felt comfortable enough to turn his back to me.

“Wait!” I yelled after him. “This joke isn’t funny!”

He didn’t stop walking.

‘I guess I’ll just catch up with him at home then’ I thought to myself. I went about the rest of my day normally, sending off a few quick texts to him here and there. I received no reply back, but that wasn’t out of the ordinary. He tended to be pretty busy and didn’t pull his phone out to check often.

I made it back to our house. The front door illuminated by a single light above the frame.

“Honey! I’m home!” I yelled into the darkness. I walked in and set my purse on the table. I flipped on the lights in the living room and was startled. Nothing was the same as when I left this morning. The furniture he picked was missing. In its place was the set that I had argued I wanted that day years ago. It looked as if it wasn’t lived on. There weren’t even any creases from lounging and reading a good book. The picture frames that lined the walls held memories of usthat I vividly remember and yet, they were all missing him. It was like someone had taken an eraser to each frame and removed him, leaving me standing by myself in every one. Our wedding photos were replaced by cute artsy pictures of cats that I had wanted to put up but he always thought they were too cheesy. My hands were shaking as I pulled out my phone to try calling him again. It rang for what seemed like an eternity then went to his voicemail, only it wasn’t his voicemail. Just a cold message saying the line had been disconnected. How could this be? We were just talking about children this morning and now he’s just disappeared from my life?

I pressed call on another name in my contact list and paced until someone picked up.

“Hello.” The voice on the other side said.

“Dad! I don’t know what is going on. He’s just gone and I don’t know what to do. He’s not even in an of my picture frames on my walls. I feel like I’m going crazy but he’s just vanished!” I wailed into the phone hoping my dad would calm my crazy. He’s been my rock since I can even remember.

“Hold on sweetheart. I’m going to need you to calm down. Who is missing?” He replied slowly, as if he was scared of the panicked animal I was becoming.

“My husband!” I cried.

“Oh shoot. Okay, I’m going to need you to come here. Can you do that for me?” He said softly.

“Why would I need to come to your house? What does that have to do with him?” I squeaked.

“I screwed up sweetheart. The contract must have been void. Something must have happened. I’ll fix this I promise.” He swore. Leaving my brain turning to a puddle of mush.

“What does that even mean? What aren’t you telling me?” I questioned as a pit formed in my stomach.

“The deal I made ten years ago has been broken. You were just so sad that he had broken up with you and I had stumbled upon a way that would fix your heart. I couldn’t live seeing you so broken, so I made a deal to make him fall head over heels for you, marry you, and grow old with you. This was never part of the plan.” He rambled.

Bile rose in my throat.

“You’re telling me you mad a fucking deal with a fairy to make him love me again? So this whole time my life has been a lie?” I snarled. “How was that supposed to make me better? The last ten years of my life have been a lie!”

“Just come here, I can summon it again and we can figure this out.” He pleaded with me, but the panicking animal had become an enraged one.

“No! I’m not going to do that. What makes you think I want to be anywhere near you right now?” I screamed into the phone. “Just leave me alone to think about this!” Then, I hung up the phone. It started vibrating instantly. I checked the caller id and when I read it was from my dad I chucked my phone at the wall, watching the screen shatter upon impact. Childish yes, but I think I’m entitled to a mental breakdown right now.
