Morning Coffee

It was a normal Thursday morning. I was in line for my morning coffee before work when I got a text from my friend. She was going on and on about her new boyfriend. Caileb was exactly her type, nice, quiet, had glasses and liked writing poetry. He also had that soft brown hair and blues eyes she loved. Amy was head-over-heals for this guy! He had woken her up this morning with a text-poem about the sunrise.

I sighed looking at the screen shots she sent me. I had never had a boyfriend, and at times like this it was hard not to be jealous. Even on the nights when I find Amy heart-broken on the floor, mascara mixing with melted ice cream, I wish I had someone I felt that strongly about.

I was jolted back to the present by the cashier. She was about my age but taller and thinner. Dark circles under her eyes told me she had had a ruff week. I ordered my drink, and then went to sit and watch the sunrise. I popped in an earbud and listened to some quiet, lonely music. A single tear escaped my eye before I could stop it.

I wiped it away quickly when my name was called and grabbed my coffee. It was warm and comforting, exactly what I needed. I smiled and walked out of the shop feeling a little better.

“Wait!” I heard someone say behind me. I turned around and looked up at the stranger wide-eyed. He was tall, about 6’2, and built well. His thick arms held the door of the cafe open as he stepped out. Olive skin and brown eyes held a glow as the early morning sun hit them. He was stunning in a warmly masculine way.

“I, uh,” he stammered, running a hand through thick dark hair. “I just wanted to ask, um, if you’re ok?” He let the door close behind him awkwardly, and shoved his hands in him pockets. “Yeah, why?” I said stepping back with one hand reaching for the knife in my pocket. “I, uh, just, uh, saw you crying in there, and I wanted to make sure everything was ok?” He said uncomfortably.

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine, just tired.” I smiled. “Coffee helps!” I said, taking another sip. He snorted a little at that and relaxed. “What’s your name, by the way?” I asked. “Tyler,” he answered, “yours?”

“Grace.” I said. I glanced at my watch and blinked. I was going to be late. “Well, I better get going,” I said backing away. “Do you mind if I have your number?” He asked a little shyly. “Just in case you aren’t ok?” He joked. “Sure, I guess,” I said raising an eyebrow.

A couple minutes later I was driving to work, Tyler still on my mind.
