When I look in the mirror it is not myself that I see but something else. The glass feels more like a barrier that one can see through than an object ment for vanity.

I feel the gaze of something that shares my appearance but not my intent, a creature wholly sinister and hungry for fear and pain. I sense that if I look too long into the eyes we share I will be lost there with the holder on the other side. I feel as well that my stare would act as an invitation to a malicious imposter all too ready to replace me.

I fear that silver surface as a diver fears black and murky water, I dare not swim it alone because I may not be.
