i love my house, but my home can love me

we picked my house, but my home picked me

my house has an address, my home has names

my house has a sturdy foundation, with walls that protect me, rooms that allow vulnerability

my home also fits these roles

my house has seen tears fall from my face, while my home wiped them

my house has doors that i’ve slammed out of anger, but my home opened them to guide me through my feelings

my house has changed layouts and colors, my home always remains the same

my house watched as i became a mother, my home helped

my house heard the cries of a newborn baby turn into laughter of a toddler, my home smiled

my house has floors of which my son took his first steps, my home cheered

my house has seen life, and watched as one left

my house has seen a love one walk through the door whom never had the chance to walk back out

my house shattered

my house felt vacant

my house then became foreign

but because the house has a home we withstood all of the pain and remained strong

we endure everything as a unit, as a home
