POEM STARTER
Submitted by Maranda Quinn
Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds.
You can grow flowers, or you can grow weeds.
Write a poem that either begins or ends with this couplet.
Shuffled Thoughts
My mind is a garden,
my thoughts are the seeds.
I can grow flowers,
Or I can grow weeds.
My thoughts fly around,
Getting caught in the breeze
Of rushing through life
And wishing for ease.
There is much to do
With so little time.
How do I care for others
When I can barely care for mine?
I have to do this.
I need to do that.
But I can’t concentrate.
Where is my mind at?
This makes me angry.
That makes me upset.
This is so unfair.
Why do I always fret?
A soft gentle voice
Breaks through the haze.
My feet on the ground
Standing firmly in place.
“Mama, I need you.”
“Here I am love.”
He reaches for my hand
And it fits like a glove.
“Mama, look at this.”
“WOW! That is grand!”
She shows me a shell
That she found in the sand.
“Honey, come here.”
“I’m coming, dear.”
He gives me a hug
And calms all my fear.
I take a deep breath
And soak it all in.
Tension melts away.
My lips form a grin.
The weeds begin to wilt.
My mind starts to clear.
A quick time out
Is the beginning of cheer.
Look in front of you.
Let the air kiss your skin.
Listen to the joy
And feel what is within.
Blessings like rain
Soon drip into my mind.
Reasons to give thanks
Become easy to find.
Those negative thoughts
Will eventually yield
As you count your many blessings
Like beautiful flowers in the field.
