POEM STARTER

Write a poem about taking a gamble.

Your interpretation can include the classic ideas associated with gambling, or something more metaphorical.

Take a Chance

Yo,

Chance don’t knock, it kicks through the door,

Boot print fresh on your doubt-ridden floor.

Mum said play safe, life said “nah, war,”

Now I’m ten toes down, heart raw to the core.

Clock ticks loud in the home estate,

Dreams boxed in by the rent and the rate.

But I saw a gap in the clouds, no gate…

Just bars in my brain and a beat from fate.

They said,

“Stick to the plan, keep your head low,

Clock in, clock out, let the bread grow.”

But I ain’t built for the beige and the dead flow,

I spit risk with a twist like a menthol draw.

Took a mic from the shadows, truth in the storm,

Voice cracked from cold, but the fire was warm.

Every “no” that I ate made a beast in my form,

Now I rise on the bassline, breakin’ the norm.

See,

Taking a chance ain’t a flex, it’s a fight,

It’s a 3am verse under flickering light.

It’s your name in their mouth when you’re outta their sight,

It’s the pain in your chest when you’re climbing the height.

But man’s still climbing, knuckles all raw,

‘Cause I’d rather fall fast than rot on the floor.

Life’s not a line, it’s a clash, it’s a score …

So I jumped on the rhythm and kicked down the door.

_No regrets in the grime, just echoes of might,_

_When you gamble your fear for a flicker of light._
