POEM STARTER

Submitted by Space Cadetter

Write an ode to an extinct animal, without ever saying the animal’s name - this rule also applies to the title.

King Of The Coast

Through redwoods where you used to roam

Now empty of your massive prints

Man invaded your coastal home

Mountains and valleys have missed you since

Monstrous size of 8 feet tall

The largest of which weighed over a ton

No more do we stand in awe

By mid 1900’s the last were gone

Fearless predator, hunted for sport

All in the name of safe settlement

Your time on Earth was cut short

Much to our own detriment

Extinct before you flew on the flag

Fur glistening in the morning light

Now naught but a symbol we proudly tag

Help future us to do what’s right
