Mercy

The bridge shrieks under the weight of The Herald.

“You’re running out of time!” Jax yells in my head.

“Shut up.” I growl back.

I leap at the monster in front of me. But it dodges out of the way. Like water slipping through cracks.

Panting, I look at the clock of life. The hands are close to aligning.

“You have to-“

“I know!”

The only thought I have is of my brothers. My sisters. My daughter. My family.

Finally the Herald swipes, flipping me into the air.

In the distance I can see the mist, rushing towards me.

“Yes.” My words whisper to the wind.

Landing on my feet, a shock runs up from my impact.

“Heal me Jax.”

The Spirit looks at me with its dead eyes. A flicker of sadness in those orbs.

“No.”

A hysterical giggle escapes. “No?!” I spit.

He just shakes his head as he floats to the Herald.

“I did say you were running out of time. But you didn’t take my advice.”

I scrunch my eyes at him, disbelief written on my face. The hands on the clock align. And for the first time in my 20 years, the Herald speaks. Even more surprising he grins.

“Judgement time.” He whispers. A wave of force plows me off of my feet.

“As us mortals say, Jokes on you.” I yell as rogue debree fly. The mist. The ever comforting mist, stops my fall. It wraps around my arms and legs allowing me to use its power. I fly into the air, higher and higher into the clouds.

Then I drop down, falling fast. I push the mist onto my hands and it glows a golden hue.

“Take the power Chosen one.” I hear it whisper.

Using the mist I slam onto the Herald’s head. Cracks run through it as I springboard off it. A bright white light emanates from it and the…. Shell? Falls to ground. “Oh if only this world had shown me a little more mercy.” A voice rings in the din.

“I am here.” It rings again.

A figure surrounded by the glowing light stretches its hand.

No, the light is the figure.

And then Heaven crashes to Earth.

“If only this world had shown Us. Us, a little more mercy. I am the God Killer. That infernal cage trapped me. For that I thank you. “

I search for Jax.

Then it hits me.

Jax is the God Killer. That was his body in the cage.

“Oh fates.” I swear

As he said, “if only this world had shown me a little more mercy.”

The mist is gone now. Wiped away by the godly light. And that’s how I die.

A crack runs across my vision. Another. And another.

“What??” I murmur. I can hear the screams of agony. Is it Jax’s. Is it mine?

“Welcome great hero.” A deep voice says.

I whip around to find a man in a pitch black robe. He has brown hair and eyes that are the exact color as evil.

“Are you the god of death?” I ask.

He laughs, a cold sound.

“No no dear boy. I am death.”

“You see when you and the God killer broke the Godly dynamic all those gods died.”

“Fates. I broke…I broke fate.”

Now it’s up to me to fix it.
