WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Maranda Quinn

Show a powerful emotion – love, grief, rage - in a quiet, everyday moment.

Instead of writing a dramatic and drawn out scene, think about how subtle actions and sensory details can carry the weight of the feeling.

Gone

I slowly draw my headphones out from under the covers of my unmade bed - I couldn’t be bothered this morning. I take out my phone, and scroll through the endless apps in which I have spent hours on just to kill time. Eventually, I reach a playlist and hesitantly press it. Ongoing roadworks outside my window make it impossible to get things done (at least that’s what I’m telling myself), so I plan to drown it out while listening to music; the sound of drills and cars won’t be ringing in my ears every second. I step towards my window, sitting on chair as I watch the world go on without me interrupting it. It clearly doesn’t need me… I am just a pawn in a large game of chess. The clouds move just as they normally would - my absence unnoticed. People stroll by, laughing with their friends; I can’t even recall the last time I laughed. Not since she died. It’s okay, though - lots of people go through grief. I’m just waiting for acceptance. It will come soon - maybe…
