POEM STARTER
Submitted by Margaret Sok
“You’ve come back, but I no longer need you.”
Write a poem or short story including this line.
Not Looking Back
I begged death to take me
The first time you walked out—
Left me broken, shattered.
Cold and hollow
My tears could’ve filled a lake.
And I wept, and I wept,
Until even my tears
Grew tired of weeping.
I couldn’t walk out
Without looks of pity.
Then you came back.
I thought, this is it.
You came back for me,
Because deep in your heart,
You knew you couldn’t live
Without loving me.
But what a fool I was.
You walked out again—
This time, not looking back.
Left me once more
Shattered in tears.
I couldn’t move through the world
Without hearing what a fool I’d been.
“Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.”
So I gathered my skirts,
Learned to love me
In the way you never could.
I saw the worth
You refused to see.
And when you came back
Once again,
I knew—
This time,
You would never leave.
That finally,
You saw me.
You begged, and begged—
Words pouring:
“You’ve come back.”
But I had changed.
“I no longer need you.”
I looked at you,
Gathered my dress,
Left you in dread—
Not looking back.
