STORY STARTER

Inspired by Shadow Queen

You receive an invitation from Hades inviting you to the underworld for a chat.

Whether you place this in the current world, a fantasy world, or ancient times, think about how your character would respond to this request.

Hell’s Not Waiting

Michelle couldn’t go back now. She wish she just went with Kenneth and Vela to the park. Maybe they could have gotten fried chicken from a store or something. But no, she just chose to make grits. Those grits that burned on a gas stove. A gas stove she forgot to turn on a vent. The gas got her, sent her into a deep sleep.

Now she’s sitting on the couch, her sundress slightly wrinkled, her hair a little fizzy, and her skin glowing. She glanced at the window, it was night now. She didn’t know if Vela or Kenneth were home anymore.

She slowly sat up, exhaling. She smelt the burning grits in the air. The stove was still on. The steam was still rising. The radio was blasting music. She walked over to turn the crank off. Just then, she noticed a letter on the counter. One she never saw before she began to cook. Picking it up, she tore the top of the letter and read it.

“Hades?” She asked, scrunching her face. “What in the hell is an underworld? What in tarnation?” She mumbled, throwing the letter in the trash. The moment it hit the trashcan, the air felt cold. The heat of the stove vanished. The floor began to unravel itself as a large pit of fire and stairs opened up to Michelle.

The sound of flames and the crash of furniture drowned out her screams. Hell wasn’t waiting for her this time.
