STORY STARTER

There is a person who collects silences of all kinds. Like the moments right before someone confesses their love, the silence after laughter, or even the silence following the death of a loved one. One day they find a silence they weren’t supposed to find...

Awkward Silence

Silence is a complete absence of sound. Many experience this everyday even multiple times a day. It can be a part of many things that are beautiful and it can be a part of horrible things too. The silence before the validictorian gives their gut-wrenching speech at graduation can be looked at as a good silence. In this case it’s the build up to a very sweet moment. The silence in a room full of scared people who have no idea what is going to happen to them next can be perceived as a bad silence. This could be that last silence they hear before something bad happens.

My whole life has been devoted to silences almost like its a gift or talent of mine. I sought out to experience all types of silences. I have a group of friends who tag along on my adventures to find new unexpected silences in the world. We travel all across the country and live a normal twenty years old life but also digging into insane secrets and exploit those silences. We just got a call from an abandoned asylum in Pennsylvania. So our next move you might ask… On a flight to Pennsylvania.

We arrived at the aiport around 3:00pm and went straight to our hotel. The owner of the building told us security has been hearing screaming around 2:30am everyday. We were determined to investigate and figure out what silences and history was in that building. We ate a quick snack and got our rental to go to meet with the security officers that are on duty there. We were surprised to find out that one had quit because the job was too terrifying for him.

It was the first night here and we checked up and down halls for hours. There was four floors in this building and we wanted to at least get through one or two before we called it quits for the night. The first floor was mostly offices assuming which used to be for the doctors and nurses that worked here. We found the old record room and investigated some patients files that hadn’t been completely ruined. By this time it was nearly 2:00am and we were about to call it quits when someone suggested we wait and see if we can hear whatever happens at 2:30am so we waited. The time came and we didn’t hear a single thing the building was completely silent besides the birds, bats, and bugs moving around.

It was now the second night inside the asylum and we made it through the whole second floor quickly. Most of it was already run down and it was just old rooms for those who lived there before. Some of the doors wouldn’t even open and we weren’t going to force them open. We continued onto the third floor. This was the floor that the security would hear the screaming. So tonight we were also going to stay till that time. 2:30am was approaching rapidly and we set up in the hallway with four cameras waiting. The silence in this building wasn’t complete silence. There were bugs and rats and all types of weird creatures making noises. We thought maybe a animal was screaming and we would debunk this whole situation.

It was 2:30am on the dot when the loudest most horrendous scream let out through the entire hallway. It was so loud two of our cameras batteries drained right away and somebody fell straight on their ass. We were the only people inside this building so how the hell was this possible. Immediately following that scream was dead silence. And when I say dead silence I mean the animals, the bugs, the wind all went completely silent. If someone dropped a pin on the first floor right now you would be able to hear it. These were the silences that were not good. At this point all the lights on our cameras turned right off and the wind picked back up but inside the hallway. We all went running rapidly through the hallway I could hear people falling, crying, and screaming as they went flying down the hall. I ran for my life and jumped straight out a window.

Remember these silences I described. It’s silent around you right now as you read this. Except it’s not at all silent because that cool breeze that you feel right now past your shoulder. The light breathing you can almost feel on your ear. That’s me telling you this story because I died that night and now I come to bother those who sit in silence. I will always be in the silence… listening… watching. Don’t go looking for things you don’t need the answers to.
