WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a gossip session between two friends which suddenly turns very serious.
How can you use dialogue and speech tags to convey the change of tone?
He Lied
“Yesterday at the coffee shop, they were all out of muffins! And because I was so angry, I walked to the other one on Bathe Street and guess who I saw,” May said with excitement.
I looked at her with curiosity. “Hm,” I said. “Ben?”
May laughed at my guessing of her crush.
“No, silly, I saw Clara and Leo together, like _together together_.”
My heart dropped.
May kept speaking, “I was shocked. I thought Leo had something for you or—“
“Are you sure?” I blurted.
My chest was aching with betrayal.
Leo promised me I was the one, the one he would love. He chose _me_, not Clara!
“What were they doing?” I whispered, barely audible.
May saw the change within me and lowered her tone. Anguish came across her face. “Leo bought Clara a bouquet of flowers, and then, he, uh…”
“May, please, tell me,” I urged.
“He kissed her.”
Sobs broke from my mouth as my heart broke and bleed.
He lied.
_He lied. _
