The Truth
"It is easier to tell someone the truth when you can't see their face",
That is what my mother used to tell me,
So as I look into his pleading eyes,
My truth catches in my throat,
A treacherous feeling willing to grab me whole,
I try to speak,
Try to scream,
Try to do anything,
But it is hopeless for I am scared of the truth myself,
They never warned you how difficult it is to break one's heart,
The pain hurts more than the receiver's,
He won't let me look away,
He says he wants to know,
If only he knew of the corrosive words on my tongue,
They writhed in my mouth like a family of snakes,
Spitting back their poison into my softly sobbing heart,
A cry just then breaks from its chains,
Tears riveting down my flushed but broken face,
"I don't want to hurt you" I whisper,
I love him too much,
Too much so I could never
But not enough to stay,
A tiresome feeling washes over me just then
I collapse to my knees unable to think my thoughts,
He wraps me in an embrace,
I wish he wouldn't,
That only makes me weep harder,
A storm brews in my mind,
Chaotic and unpredictable,
A churn of sorrows I hoped to tame,
But only reveals flashes of my inner flame,
I'm stronger than this,
Wiser than this,
Braver than this,
And yet not enough,
He squeezes me and I look up,
His eyes are a vibrant grey,
Swirling violently with questions of confusion and... love,
"I'm sorry" I tearfully whisper again,
Burrying my face into his warm chest,
There, I could no longer see his face,
The truth burst out of me,
A flurry of words,
Hot and terrible,
Unleashing a lifetime of despair
