We are too at peace

With the harm all around us.

We turn a blind eye to the bloodshed

And violence and cruelty

In favor of our posh lives.

We live in houses

With food and water

Electricity and love.

While others burn in fires

Starve and dehydrate

And die by our fists.

And while those people die

Over and over and over

We pump our fists and exclaim:

“Yipee! We are at peace!

At peace with death

At peace with disease

At peace with violence!”

But we are not at peace.

Because violence sleeps in our beds

And eats dinner at our tables

And it lives with us

It is us.

But it’s fine.

It’s all fine.

We are at peace.

So they must be too.
