POEM STARTER

Write a poem through the eyes of a child, capturing their wonder at a fireworks display.

In the absence of elaborate and highly descriptive language, think how else you can capture an atmosphere of wonder.

Fireworks

As I settled down,

I hear the clapping start.

Everyone is excited,

Waiting for the display.

I watch with eyes wide,

As a trail of smoke rises.

It stops and then suddenly,

My eyes light up with the sky.

Circles of lights,

Explosions of wonder.

I watch amazed,

As the colors spread.

They stretch out,

Reaching for my awed face.

Then fade away,

And join the stars instead.

A whistle sounds,

And another shoots up.

A resounding boom,

Tells me where to look.

They light up my face,

Showing my excited smile.

My eyes sparkle and shine,

Reflecting the light show above.

Another whistle and crack,

But this one twinkles and falls.

More fly up,

Their colors mix.

I feel each rumble,

It’s echo in my chest.
