A Chance Encounter
Snow billowed down, hazing the multicolored lights that dazzled the busy sidewalk. My last minute shopping trip failed, not from a lack of ingenuity, but a lack of recipients. I️, always the lonely, only child, now caught in the all-too-lengthy dramas of long deceased parents and a hyper focus on career. Any chance to start a family of my own now faded like the summer sun in winter’s chill.
I️ pulled up my coat around my ears and pressed on, passing shop after shop - more lost in pretend than aware of the present. Ringing bells first grabbed my attention, followed closely by a swinging glass door to the face. As I️ collapsed, embarrassed at myself, I️ heard her cry out, “I’m so sorry!”, before rushing to my side. Yet, when she took my hands in hers to help me to my feet, all time rested beneath her star.
Two words escaped through my awe: “I️-I’m Tristan.”
“Nice to meet you,” she whispered.
