POEM STARTER
Awakening
Write a poem about an awakening - it could be literal or metaphorical.
The Delusion Of Grief
The delusion of grief hangs in the air like cigarette smoke
Lingering still from the night I murdered you
People always run from what is true
That’s why I love you so
I took you home and talked with you
Every word like an atheists prayer,
Every breath a breeze in a night sky
Every silence a deafening echo.
I danced with you to feel
The way your body moved under my hands
Every step making a map on my floor
Everywhere you touched me was so soft it was painful
I kissed you to see how your lips felt with my hands on your delicate neck.
You tasted like smoke and late nights
Like champagne and wine
I slit your throat to see what color your blood would be
It was dark red like a scarlet rose
And your eyes when frightened were like diamonds in the dark sea
I held your body in my arms to feel it lose its warmth.
I watched your eyes to see the life leave them.
I kissed you to taste the blood rising from your throat
It tasted like how I dreamt it would.
Like grief, like a prayer, silence, pain, and wine.
As you faded away I told you softly how much I love you
Something so beautiful shouldn’t exist in this broken world
