WRITING OBSTACLE
How would you describe silence?
Think about which senses you can use to describe the sound, and feeling, of silence.
The Quiet Parts of the World
Silence can be so loud, yet so quiet. Sitting in an empty room alone is quiet silence. Sitting in an empty room with one other person is loud silence. Why is this? Is it because of the awkward tension between the two, or just the feeling that anybody could break that loud silence?
Quiet silence is always more enjoyable. It’s a break from life, from people, from yourself. It distracts you from all the cruel realities lingering in the world, and focuses on the sweet possibilities of loneliness. Being lonely isn’t always a bad thing. It’s a way to recollect ourselves with no background voices floating around in your mind.
What is loud silence, you might be asking. Loud silence is an awkward feeling that something in the back of your mind won’t be quiet. It takes the enjoyable silence and crushes it. If you're in a quiet, empty room with one other person, it takes away all the lovely things about silence and makes it awkward.
Loud silence doesn’t always have to include two people though. It could be a frightening silence. The eerie kind of silence. The silence that happens when your alone, no movement or noise. The feeling you get that something could pop out of nowhere and disrupt that comfortable silence.
Silence can mean lots of things, it can be lots of different things. What matters most is you find where you feel your comfortable silence. Find the people who you can feel that quiet silence with.
