STORY STARTER
One, two, three drops. The potion slid down their throat, and without fail, the transformation began.
The Reunion
Susan was not exactly sure what to expect. She had heard some stories when she was younger. She always thought that they were exaggerating Grandma’s eccentricity.
Her grandmother always seemed very animated. She dressed different from most people. Her individuality made her mysterious. It was the thing Susan liked, and was going to miss the most.
O’Ma, as Susan called her left her everything. Her apartment fascinated Susan as a child. There was so many unusual books and knick knacks to look at.
As heir to O’Ma’s belongings, Susan had to go through everything in the apartment. She had to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. Sorting through O’Ma’s things was a bittersweet task.
The apartment smelled of mothballs. To some, this is an undesirable aroma. To Susan it reminded her of Thanksgiving as a child. O’Ma always had a cornucopia of goodies waiting for her.
Susan struggled doing this alone. She asked her two friends from college to come by and help her out.
Stacey arrived first. Susan greeted her with a long, tight hug. Stacey was not a very clingy person. However, she knew Susan was, and indulged her.
Roni got there shortly after Stacey. Roni was very excited to see her friends. They talked a lot on the phone and e-mail. It had been awhile since the three met in person.
Susan showed them which things she had gone through and what she was saving and disposing of. She wanted to start with O’Ma’s book collection. So they got to it, right away.
When they finished with the books. Stacey noticed that one of the bookshelves had a false back, as she was wiping them down. She pulled the board away, and behind it was a book. And a bunch of old, dusty mason jars.
She called Susan and Roni over immediately. Susan’s eyes lit up with a childlike curiosity. She grabbed the book. It was tilted, “Spells and Potions”. Roni and Stacey started to giggle. Susan had never mentioned O’Ma’s eccentricity. Almost simultaneously both Roni and Stacey blurted out, “Your grandma was a witch!?”
Susan was a little embarrassed. She hesitated, then she said, “ I thought they were just stories. I guess, yes she was.”
As Susan glanced through the book, Roni and Stacey, started reading out loud the labels on the mason jars. There were jars labeled with things they never heard of before. This also made them giggle. Stacey held up one jar, the label read “ Chipmunks pinky toenail.” Roni read another that said, “ Crushed crow beak.” The three of them became very curious about their discovery.
This find was to interesting to put down. They wanted to explore it further. It was around dinner time. They decided to get a pizza and some wine.
As they ate, Susan read names of various spells and potions. There were spells for intrusive neighbors, reading minds, and making people agreeable. As well as, potions that would make people unable to lie, or smell better.
They were having fun fantasizing about all the possibilities these spells and potions could work in their life. Although, they were skeptical that they would. The wine was kicking in. They decided they would pick one potion, and try it.
After reading all the spells and potions in the book. They decided to create a potion that would temporarily restore them to their childhood. They checked the mason jars and made sure they had all the ingredients. They followed the instructions as the book required. All that was left, was to try it .
One, two, three drops. The potion slide down their throat, and without fail, the transformation began.
The three of them started shaking as a wave of fog descended on each of them. This continued for several minutes. When the fog lifted, they sat in silence looking at each other. There was a look of befuddlement on their faces. Could it be? Was this really possible? They had transformed to their five year old selves.
At first Susan was frightened. She started to cry. Roni immediately came over and embraced her. Stacey for the first time was speechless.
They were not sure what to do. They never really considered that this might work. Susan said, “the book says this only lasts a few hours.” Roni was an optimist. She said, “ let’s play!”
When they went to stand, they were dizzy. The had not thought about how the alcohol would affect their smaller bodies. They tried to fight it. Quickly they all dozed off.
The next morning they awoke to the sound of the landscapers blower. The three of them felt very hung over. Their thoughts were somewhat blurred. Finally Stacey asked, “ Was I just drunk, or did we transform into children last night?” Roni jumped right in and said, “ I was just thinking I dreamt that.” Susan picked up the book next to her. She looked at it with disbelief. Then she said, “is it possible we just drank to much and all had the same dream?” They all sat in silence.
