WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a letter to a friend, from the perspective of someone living 100 years in the future.

What commonplace things might they mention that would surprise a reader now, and how can you use these to drive an interesting narrative?

100 years into the future

To the keeper of the ship that carries my deepest secrets and perspectives,

This morning I woke up to robots greeting me, waves of mechanical scents blanketing the room and the sound of technology bombarding my eardrums. This wasn't a dream, nor was it science fiction. This is reality 100 years into the future. Yesterday, I was in a bedroom with my favourite posters, interesting books and meticulously carved sculptures of robots. Today, it was like the robots turned from sculptures to reality. The posters were replaced by live screens with instant AI responses that could generate images in a span of seconds. I couldn't believe my eyes, even my books turned digital. Nothing feels real anymore. Each interaction with a robot feels artificial, now knowing that thousands of programming hides behind each of their responses. Food tastes insipid, lacking flavour. I can't tell anymore: What is real and what is artificial?

It isn't just the technology in my bedroom. As I walked onto the verandah, it was shrouded in darkness. It was still morning, yet this encumbering world didn't even let the light of sun pass through. Solar panels are lined up on my rooftop, symbolising humanity's single effort to combat climate change. Yes, it is still an issue! The garden didn't have the earthly scent of rosemary or thyme. Nor did it have the serene nature of trees and plants. There is a new simulator, aimed to match the setting of the gardens a hundred years ago. The simulator feels like I'm playing a game for children in the shopping centre. It didn't build atmosphere, it destroyed it. If you explore life in a hundred years, you are playing a duplicate simulated version of life for you now.

I walked back inside my house. Curiosity coursed through my veins, when this thought appeared 'What is the latest news'. However, I didn't need to walk up to the TV and turn it on. Nor did I even have to ask one of the robot assistents. This is because the robot can track and tailor my thoughts, even predicting my activities before I say it. Even my thoughts aren't private now. Each robot can hear my instincts even when I am writing this letter now. But, news hundred years ago and now are not the same. Mr O'hare, the villain in Lorax is being celebrated because of his simulation technology. All cartoon characters come to life in this world, breaking the lines between the possible and the impossible. This means there is no negativity in this world. No change. No difference. This makes each day in this world more and more boring, a robot can do everything for me.

My job? As I was new to this world, I wanted to explore places where I can get a part-time job for now before I pursure my long-term dreams. I walked towards the supermarket, as it was the first actual shop I could see. Everything is online now except for selected stores. You would expect that these selected stores are a break from the digital world where you can interact with actual humans. Incorrect. There is no one in the story except for the haunting security cameras. Everything is digital screens, where you choose your product and a robot will deliver it to you without the need of any searching. Then a thought echoed inside my head 'Where do people work in this world?'. The truth is, my personal robots do all the work for me. Any job you would expect in your world. House agent, vet, television reporter and even a doctor. Would you trust a robot, who already uses other people's information to shape their responses to treat you, in this increasingly dangerous world?

Robots can do absolutely anything for me losing the need for face to face interactions. I miss you so much but please keep my disappearance a secret. I can't imagine my family's reaction to my unexpected transportation. I just wanted to write to you to tell you that I am safe in this world or atleast I think I am... I already am forgetting how it is like talking to an actual person. Please keep in touch as I will continue updating you on my experiences. Before I end this letter I have one thing to say: 100 years ago, life was extremely different, enjoy the minute things in life that are real while you can. Don't chase technology like everyone else because it is new. Sometimes the oldest things in life are the best ones.

XOXO, Navyaa
