POEM STARTER

Use the idea of something becoming polluted as a metaphor in your poem.

The Tarnished Well

I started with a beacon, a vision of perfect, clear light,

My ideal life: achievement and relationships—clean, shining, and right.

A clear stream of positive impact, where no darkness could creep.

But the black oil of overcommitment started leaking deep.

My intense enthusiasm for all things new became a toxic flood,

Stress and burnout creating a sulfur-heavy, choking mud.

The meaningful conversations I sought, the soul's deep flow,

Were choked by debris, the small talk I failed to let go.

I polluted the very well I valued, my sacred, clear stream,

Trading peace for the chemical stench of an exhausted, failing dream.

My big, bright heart, now stuck, pushes only the muck.

The reservoir is poisoned by the energy that got stuck.
