The Note
During the night, Noor walked through the psych ward. The only sound was her footsteps hitting the ground and her quiet breathing. It was her first night shift on the job. It was her first time on the job.
She requested to get nights off because her FND makes it hard for her to stay up and not be fatigued or dizzy. They gave it anyway. Maybe they forgot. Maybe they wanted to see how she would do with basic tasks. Noor didn’t want to argue. They were already hesitant about giving her the job because of her condition. They knew she was qualified, just wasn’t sure if it’d be safe. Noor told them it’d be fine. She knows when she’s about to pass out, when her legs are about to go. After a lot of convincing, assessing, they accepted her.
Noor got tasked with the job to check each room. Make sure every kid is okay.
The first room contained a sleeping girl. Her blonde locks were spread around the white pillow. She looked young—too young to be here. Curiosity got the best of her and she was about to go through her notes when she heard something drop.
Noor left the room and headed to where the sound came from—the room straight across.
She entered the room and she gasped.
There was a child. Unmoving. Not breathing. Not a single breath.
There was a medicine tub. It was empty. Not a single tablet.
Noor pressed the large red button as if was a reflex.
Alarms were blared.
They were loud.
Deafening.
People started to in.
"Noah-Noah wake up!"
"Who gave him melatonin!?" Noor thinks she heard.
Despite all the loudness, Noor noticed something on his bedside table. A note. A small folded note resting on the wood.
She grabbed it and slowly slipped out of the room.
She slumped down against the wall until she hit the ground.
Everything was so loud yet so quiet.
Noor opened the note.
‘Tell my mum I’m sorry’
Noor stared down at it for a few seconds—minutes maybe. She couldn’t tell. She closed the note and put it in her pocket.
Noor pulled out her phone and scrolled through her contacts until she found someone.
She pressed on the call button and waiting for the ringing to stop.
"Hello?" the voice comes through.
"Hey, mum."
