Princess Hazel
“She is not who she says she is.”
I hear one of the voices say from the cellar below me. My stomach twists, I know they are talking about me. The way I claimed to be Princess Hazel, Prince Davidson’s fiancée in the arranged marriage. The one no one had ever seen before, acting like a princess from a far off country was easy—I thought I would never get caught.
I had planned on killing Davidson after the wedding, taking the throne for the people, turning this stupid kingdom into something worthwhile—I had planned on a lot of things.
But the more I found out about the kingdom and the prince, the more I realized that it wasn’t all black and white, good and evil; there was a whole lot of gray in there that I was too blind to see.
That wasn’t the only thing I noticed, either.
I had fallen in love with the prince and the kingdom—all of it. And now it was destined to all fall down in my face.
“The girl, Hazel, she is not as she seems.” The voice repeats. And that is when I hear a very familiar voice; Prince Davidson.
“I know.” He says with a sigh, my stomach turns. _He knew? _“I had a feeling ever since the _real _Hazel arrived.”
Fear jolts through me and I feel like I am going to throw up, right here in a stairwell eavesdropping on a conversation I was obviously not supposed to be apart of.
“We believe she has come to kill you and take the throne for herself.” The first voice says, a guard, I realize.
Part of me hopes Davidson denies it, believes me, trusts me. But he doesn’t. “I’m aware.” He agrees, his voice tight.
My chest tightens and I hold back a sob. Everything was perfect. I messed everything up. I thought Davidson felt the same way about me that I feel about him………I guess he knows the truth now.
“We should execute her before she knows we know.” The guard says, and I am too heart broken, too hopeful that Davidson will say no to notice the weight of his words.
“Do it at sunset.” Davidson says boldly. “So she won’t see it coming.”
This sobers me of my sorrows. I need to run for my life. I need to do what I came here to do.
Kill the prince.
“She won’t see it coming.” Says the guard.
I wouldn’t be so sure of that.
