STORY STARTER

"Everybody wants to judge, but nobody wants to listen."

Write about a character who is going through a typically stigmatised situation. As an added challenge, try to write from the perspective of the opposite gender to yourself.

The “Mad” Man

Everybody wants to judge, but no one wants to listen. In my family, being the oldest brother of five, I was supposed to lead by example—never do anything wrong.

But they won’t listen to my reasons. They don’t know why I killed my wife. To them, I am just a mad man. But they don’t know the whole story.

We live in a world where everything is free to those willing to risk anything to take it; this world is called Cubiditas.

Anything you want, you can have; if you are willing to make a sacrifice. My wife, Evangeline, wanted _everything_.

Once she had heard of this deal, she would trade everything she had. Jewelery, clothes, days of her life, and eventually our house. All for stupid things, like endless youth and being loved by everyone. Eventually, she became greedy. More and more she would trade, until she found one thing that she wanted more than anything.

Magic.

She knew if she had it, she could have anything she wanted without having to trade anything in return.

But what did she have to trade in return?

High wishes require high costs, and Evvie was willing to pay. The cost was the life of our oldest son, Harrison. I thought it was a joke at first, but Evvie was certain she wanted to make this trade. I tried to talk her out of it, but she wouldn’t listen. She was going to kill Harrison for some stupid powers.

I had to stop her.

Harrison had a bright future ahead of him, and what would Evvie even do if she had those powers? Surely her greedy quest for power wouldn’t end there.

So I went to the wizard who guarded the magic with a deal. I wanted Evvie to stop her addiction to magic, and in return I would sell my soul to him.

However, he chose to kill her. Said it was the only way he could stop her desire for power.

That wasn’t part of the deal.

So I, won’t hold my end of the bargain exactly either. I told him I’d sell him a soul—but does it have to be mine?

Maybe I am a mad man after all.

_Ps. Story might be weird, wrote this at like midnight running on barely any sleep. _
