WRITING OBSTACLE
Write a story that includes an example of a braided narrative.
This structure uses multiple interwoven storylines, creating a complex and layered narrative. This can be most easily achieved with different character perspectives or different timelines.
Missing: Spring
(I’m not done with this story yet! I made this forever ago! Before I even knew this app existed lol. Hope you guys like it!!)
Spring was missing. The first to notice where Athena and Jay, two very observant siblings. Athena was a girl, tomboyish was she with her short hair and rough nature. Jay was more girlish, liking dolls, and longer hair with a softish sort of nature. Celine and Luna were the next to know since they loved winter. Celine was very girly and had strict standards for girls. Luna on the other hand didn’t care about standards and thought as long as you were happy it didn’t matter. Celine and Luna were best friends despite their different point of view on things. Elliott was last to know. He hated winter so of course he would notice. He had short hair with green eyes and didn’t like working more than he needed to.
Athena and Jay‘s parents still weren’t home yet from their business trip. They often left their home to go exploring different places, such as rainforest or deserts, leaving their kids behind. Athena and Jay’s parents thought they were old enough to stay home alone by themselves so they didn’t need a nanny of any kind. They considered themselves lucky. They had read stories of awful nannies, babysitting children. Without a nanny, they didn’t need to worry about if they were nice or not.
Athena looked at the window. “Winter has lasted too long. I wonder if anyone else has noticed or not. Come on, Jay, don’t be a bum and come with me to see if anyone else has noticed this long winter.” Jay didn’t move off the couch. He had been there all morning. “Come on, Jay, let’s go.” Athena said impatiently. “Five more minutes.” Jay mumbled not wanting to get up. “No,” replied Athena. “We need to go now before it gets too cold.” Jay didn’t respond. “Ugh.” Athena rolled her eyes and walked over to Jay, picking him up off the couch and setting him down on the floor. Jay’s eyes were closed and he swayed slightly on the spot, still sleepy. “Let’s go, you bum.” Jay tried to rub the sleep out of his eyes and stand up straight but couldn’t. Athena grabbed their warmest cloaks and wrapped it around Jay before she bundled up herself, ready to set out into the cold winter village.
At Luna’s house, Celine and Luna were arguing about what type of tea to drink that morning. “Ugh, you’re so stubborn when it comes to tea!” Celine shouted angrily. Luna smirked, “Oh thank you!” Celine sighed, her shoulders slumping. “Come on. Why don’t we just go outside instead? The cold air will wake us up. Better than any tea will.” Luna nodded and they went outside in their warmest jackets, a luxury for most. Once they went outside, they walked around the village, exploring the snow covered houses.
When Athena and Jay came across Celine and Luna outside, she asked if they had noticed that winter was still there. She sounded frustrated since no one else noticed and she didn’t expect them to either. “Actually yes. We have.” Luna replies. Jay’s eyes widen and Athena perks up. “Really?” Jay asks not believing them. Celine nods, not speaking up since she doesn’t approve of Athena’s and Jay’s looks. “We thought we were the only ones.” Athena says, explaining their thoughts beforehand. “I’m glad we were wrong.” “You should be.” Replies Celine, rudely. Luna nudges Celine’s shoulder. “Nicer Celine.” Luna tells her. Celine grunts in response, but says nothing more.
Meanwhile, Elliott Farewell was still at his parents‘s farm, hoping for some action of any kind. He often grew bored of watching the animals. Of course, he didn’t say anything to his parents. That would be disrespectful. He shivered. He hated winter. He could barely stand it. Why was this one longer than all the rest? Elliott groaned. How much longer would he have to stay out here? In the cold? Didn’t his parents know this was his least favorite season of all time? Or did they ignore that fact too, as his parents often did? They ignored Elliott’s complaints and favorite things and least favorite things. He rarely complained though, he knew better. And he didn’t really share his favorite and least favorite things anymore. His parents listened to his sister and her complaints way more than they did Elliott. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Elliott’s mother called him inside. He ran inside wanting to escape the cold morning air. “Elliott,” His mother said, “we need some bread. Can you go pick some up from the store?” Elliot nodded. Anything was better than watching the animals. Even picking up bread from the store. He left the house with enough money to buy just a loaf of bread. On the way he came across Celine, Luna, Athena, and Jay talking about the longer winter. He walked over towards them.
“What are we going to do?” Asked Athena, expecting an answer. “What are you guys talking about?” Elliott asked when he joined them. “Something you don’t notice.” Replied Celine, brushing him off. “What, the longer winter?” Celine’s eyes widen and she looked at Eliott. Athena smiled. “You do notice it! Great!” Elliot looked confused. “And others don’t?” Jay shook his head. “Nope, no one. We asked.” “Oh wow, that’s insane. I have to go, but I’ll try to call later. Numbers?” Luna grabbed paper from her bag and they all exchanged numbers. They knew what was happening wasn’t good, and maybe they could help.
Unbeknownst to the unlikely five, Spring had been kidnapped. The kidnappers locked Spring up in a sound proof cell and locked her in sun metal. Sun metal stops Spring and Fall from changing seasons, while moon metal stops Summer and Winter from changing. Spring could fight all she wanted and yell as loudly as she could but none would know of her presence. Without Spring, summer and fall would never come again- just what the kidnappers wanted.
That night, Athena was the first to text. ‘Could we meet at the library tomorrow afternoon to talk about the situation?’ Jay was eating at the table, ignoring Aytena’s text. “Jay! What do you think?” The only reply Athena got was a mumbled “Huh?” From his direction. Athena rolled her eyes, checking her phone. No one had seen her text yet.
