The pond sat off to the right. She was vaguely aware of it as her water source, but she ignored it for now; something else held her attention. Motionless, she stared into the clearing where she usually crossed to the water.

Though the sun had set hours ago and the forest was baptized in darkness, a light shone among the trees. Unwilling, or perhaps unable, to move, she stood there in the dark, not five meters from the trip of campers who sat around the light, seeming to worship it. Her skin tingled and her lips were threatening to pull back and show her teeth, but she stayed where she was.

She was not hungry anyway.

The coyote turned and retreated into the trees, making not a sound as the campers roasted some small game meats, oblivious.
