Chapter 1 of My Manuscript
“What do you mean _she’s gone?_”
“I mean she’s gone. They took your sister,” his voice breaks. “They took my baby girl…”
Tears roll down my cheeks, “Who took her?” I walk into his office and grab his arms, “Dad.Who took her?Who took Tinka?”
“They took my baby girl,” he buries his face into my shoulder.
“Who!? Dad! Who took her?”
“The Prylans,” he cries.
Pryla decided that they wanted to take our land a month ago. We refused, their kingdom is far more larger than ours already and majority of their land was ours, the kingdom is awfully greedy. They wanted more than they had, so, as a response to our refusal, they waged war, we fought back, strong. We weren’t about to give up our kingdom for a power hungry family, so when King Matako realised we weren’t going to give up so easily, he took our people as hostages. The man has very little human decency, but the little he has he uses it okay enough for the kind of man he is, he only takes adults, soldiers, sometimes women, never kids. No, not kids. But I guess he changed his mind last night when he decided he’s going to take my eleven year old sister, Tinka.
“Well we have to get her back! We have to fight back! ”
“No,” my father sniffs, lifting his head up from my shoulders,“They will only kill her.”
My eyes widen,“He wouldn’t…”
“Oh he would,” he nods. “He most definitely would.Anastasia…” He pulls away from me. “The king of Numix and I have agreed to something.”
“What is it?” I ask, letting go of him.
He takes a deep breath and breaks the news, “We have agreed that the best move for our kingdom to take is for us to form an alliance.”
“Okay…Is there anything else?”
“The only way King Ade will agree is if you marry his son, Prince Eiran, heir to the throne.”
“W…What?”
“I am so sorry Anastasia, darling you have to understa–”
“Understand!? You want me to understand why I have to marry a man I met probably once when I was a child!?”
“It’s the only way to get your sister back!”
“You could always give the Prylans more land!”
“Anastasia,you know I can’t do that–”
“Why not!?” I explode.
“You know how Pryla treats Neurous! If we sacrifice our land, our people will suffer! Our people will die!”
I swallow.
I know he’s right. The Prylans never liked us Neurous, if you were born with the gift of water rather than the gift of fire, you die before you even get held by your mother. King Matako has only let Pyros into his kingdom. If we sacrifice our land, it means we’re sacrificing our people, kids, babies, elderly, the ill, all of them will be dead or if lucky, used as slaves or sent to the prisons.
“How will marrying Prince Eiran help? They’ll see that we are retaliating and kill Tinka on the spot.”
“He wouldn’t dare to. King Matako has only one heir to the throne and that is his son, Ruel,” he explains. “We both know how ruthless King Ade can be,he won’t hesitate to kill Prince Ruel.”
I wipe away my tears,“And marrying Prince Eiran is the only way?”
My father nods.
