STORY STARTER

Write a descriptive narrative about the world your novel is set in.

Step away from your main plot and consider how the world shapes your story. If your story takes place somewhere familiar (like the world today), focus on which elements of it will play into your story.

Kalliope’s Quest

A picturesque mountain range towers behind the village of Aquastilla. A very peaceful village with many small huts and a few shops. Surrounded by a moderate fortification the town is as protected as it is welcoming, though few travelers venture that far out as it is significantly removed from the main cities and trade hubs of the continent. The fortifications are well lit and always manned, but usually by soldiers who double as farmers butchers and carpenters. Technically claimed by the Onum kingdom this settlement exists outside the true reach of enforcement but enjoys the benefits of regular supply deliviries while maintaining its own culture and traditions. The mountain range and forest beyond the village are largely unexplored and are said to be the refuge place of mythical creatures run out by the ever expanding kingdom.

Originally settled by refugees of the Perditus clan who were never at war with the Onum but certainly not welcomed in their towns the town has several rivers surrounding it that are fed by the thawing ice caps each year off of the mountain range. The rivers add to man made fortifications as a protective barrier. Many years have passed since the Perditus clan was pushed to this edge of the world and many traditions have been lost or mixed with those of the Onum. However the Onum became much more tolerant as the town was able to produce significant surplus crops for trade. Several Onumites began to call Aquastilla home and the tolerance for the Perditus people grew to the point many bloodlines have been mixed and Aquastilla creates a rare environment of modern knowledge and ancient tradition.
