Each step digs deep

into soft soil

with rocks

stabbing

the soles of my feet.

My dust caked lips

cling to my tongue

my mind tempts,

fantasy,

of water

and food.

My eyes burn with sweat,

I gaze

upward to see

more of the mountain

with no end to be.

Alone,

left behind

from my team.

I look back and see

how far I’ve journeyed.

Memories play

one after another

of hardships

and joys.

The wind dances across my face;

a smile breaks through the dirt.

I then turn

and continue

to journey even further.
