STORY STARTER

Two characters have been seated beside each other for a long train journey. One strikes up a conversation.

Consider how you can write an engaging but realistic dialogue in this scenario.

Awkward On The Orient Express

“Hey, how’s it’s going” Lee mumbled as he brought his luggage into the passenger cars room. His voice wasn’t ready to speak, causing his mumble to trail off at the end as he cleared his throat.

“Morning there.” Gerry replied, equally as soft and awkward. It was two hours after lunch. Gerry wiped his brow, hoping the awkward greeting he gave was ignored and not scrutinized for him not saying the correct time of day.

Lee shuffled his luggage away in the overhead storage of the room in the passenger car, pushing twice on the roller bag to get it positioned securely. Wiping his brow from the struggle against his bag he sat down across from Gerry, who was reading through a newspaper. Lee looked out the window, twiddling his thumbs before looking back to the window in the door that led to the hallways of the passenger car.

The train chugged on with a rhythmic clunking, serving as the only noise shared beteeen Lee and Gerry.

“So…you on holiday as well?” Lee murmured through the trains rhythm. Gerry peered up from his newspaper.

“Yeah, thought it would be a nice time seeing the alps.” Gerry spoke, putting the newspaper down. Lee pointed with his thumb towards the hallways and gave a slight smile.

“Sorry to interfere, they had to move me from my room abruptly in the night.” Lee chuckled.

“Is that so? I’ve never heard of such a thing.” Gerry replied curiously.

“Me too, but this suited man told me I was interfering with his examination and kicked me out of my own room.”

“Examination? Were you in the room where the passenger was killed?”

“Yep that was my room. Terrible luck, now I’m a train nomad I guess.” Chuckled Lee.

Gerry nodded with a soft and slightly shocked smile.

They both looked in opposite directions, hoping the train ride or investigation would come to and end as the train rhythmically clacked on through the mountains.
