WRITING OBSTACLE

Your character sees everything in black and white. One day, they see but one colour in a world of monochrome. Describe their experience of this colour.

It could be a red balloon or a blue bird - this is a good way to really get into vivid and metaphorical descriptions!

Monochrome Oddity

Sarah, a 12 year old girl, couldn’t see colours. Like all people in her town, she lost the ability to see colours at age 6. Every body had kind of accepted that they would never again see a rainbow, or the vibrance of a sunset. One day, while she was playing with her friends, she saw something strange, the truck she had been using, which had always been a boring shade of gray, was bright red! Sarah’s breath caught in her throat. She could almost feel the fire of the red burning her hands. She stared at the little truck for a long time, all the feelings she’d never had rushing back to her. Awe, fury, happiness worry, so many emotions all from one little truck! Awe, for the vibrant red that would forever be her favourite. Fury, on behalf of all the other people in her town that couldn’t remember the colours. Happiness, because she could all of a sudden see more and more colours, the blue of her shirt, the yellow of her friend’s pants. Worry, what would everyone say? Would she be taken into a lab to be studied? Would everybody reject her? But Sarah filtered out the bad thoughts and emotions and focused on her new, colourful life.
