STORY STARTER

You are reading a novel by an author you don't recognise, and slowly start to realise that the main character starkly resembles you...

(non)fiction

(This was a randomized prompt, and I used inspiration for their relation: Shy and shyer. I’ll try to use any recommendations, if you guys give me any!!)

——

_Once, there lived a teenage girl named Lilac. She was raised by her grandparents on a small farm, where she learned to make her own ingredients and cook from scratch._

Lilac stared at the paragraph. How coincidental, that her and the main character had shared a name and had the same backstory!

_Lilac often helped with the farm chores, such as making the dishes sparkly clean and tending to the animals. She had one friend— Cienn._

She paused there. This was getting a bit too coincidental… who else would have a best friend with that same unique name, whose name was also Lilac?

_Cienn and Lilac… well, they liked each other, but neither of them were brave enough to admit that to anybody, including themselves._

Her hands met her face in total embarrassment. How could this book even know her love life? And how did it know Cienn loved her back? No, wait— this was fictional, Lilac didn’t know if Cienn actually loved her simply because of the words in the page.

_One night, they hung out_

Lilac slammed the book mid-sentence, blushing. She knew exactly what was going to be written, and she didn’t want to relive that moment once again— the embarrassment! She wouldn’t even glance at that book ever again.

_Knock, knock._

Lilac opened the door.

Cienn was there.

“Hey, uhh… about last night—“ “We don’t talk about that!” Lilac briefly interrupted. “Oh— Sorry, Cienn, I was just… I don’t want a repeat of last night, you know.”

“It’s not about that, Lilac… it’s just… I left my journal here by accident.”

Oh.

_Oh._

“And you happen to write your journal entries in story form?”

“Well, I guess so… What made you guess?”

Lilac gulped. “I may or may not have mistaken your most recent entry as a book and then realized it would describe what went down last night…”

Cienn almost automatically put her head in her hands. “_Oughhh…_ you really read that?..” “Well, if it makes you feel better, I stopped at… ‘they hung out.’ Why do you write your journal entries about other people anyway?—“

Cienn was on the floor, weeping tears of embarrassment. Of course she was— the shyer one of the two, the one who passed out in Lilac’s arms that night…

Lilac’s best friend muttered something, and neither of them could comprehend the words.

Lilac sighed. “Come now, it isn’t so bad. It would have been a lot worse if someone who didn’t know the events already read the whole thing— but that isn’t the case. I read it, and stopped in the early paragraphs. Just don’t feel so shy…”

“I—I’m not shy!” Cienn ran out of the room. “Wait, you forgot your—“

Cienn slammed the door.

“—journal…”

Well… _one little_ peak at the moment wouldn’t hurt… right? Lilac slowly opened the journal— Gah! It was too wrong to look at someone’s diary like that!

But still… she wondered how Cienn wrote about the cuddling and—

_No, Lilac, stop going to that thought!_ It was just… a coincidence they ended up like that, they were so shocked it took them multiple minutes to stop… right? Neither were into girls… _right?_

(Okay guys I’m stopping here because I have another short story to get to but I promise THIS TIME I WILL ACTUALLY EXPAND IT ONCE I FINISH THE OTHER SHORT STORY)
