STORY STARTER

Write a story that starts with a character realising that something in their life must come to an end.

Farewell

Dorian sat alone in the silence of his study, the ticking of the clock a cruel reminder that time was slipping away. In that moment, he realised that something in his life must come to an end. The weight of betrayal pressed upon him like a boulder, and he understood with gut-wrenching clarity that his path had reached a fatal dead-end. Everything he had built—the company he once nurtured with passion, the trust of his family and friends—crumbled around him. And all because of a woman he once fancied, whose enchanting allure had blinded him to the warnings that echoed in every anxious conversation he’d had.

He had been warned, time and again, that her smile concealed a treacherous nature. Yet, intoxicated by hope, Dorian had dismissed those voices as naught but envy and misguided caution. He believed in a romance that could transcend the ordinary, a love that would elevate him. Instead, this same woman had stolen not just the secrets of his company, but his very identity, leaving him bankrupt, a pariah in the eyes of those he held dear. As he stared at the empty room—a stark mirror of his inner desolation—Dorian knew there could be no escape from his despair.

In a final, desperate attempt to reconcile with the devastation he had brought upon himself and others, Dorian composed a series of farewell letters. One such letter, written with trembling, remorseful hands, read:

“Dear family,

I am writing to let you know my last few minutes and seconds I was thinking of you. And I would like to apologise for my behaviour and ask you for forgiveness. Due to my action and ignorance, I made us broke and deep in debt. But I am currently insured, and they will cover the debt and much more for you to keep on living comfortably in life. I will miss you all. And with deep, hurt heart I will gladly accept that this chapter has come to an end. With that I hope I was able to give you an out of the current bad situation. “

Each word of that letter dripped with sorrow and regret. As Dorian sealed the envelope, his eyes blurred with unshed tears, not only for the ruin he had caused but for the faint hope that his sacrifice might somehow cushion the harsh reality left behind. The act of writing had served as both a confession of his failures and a valediction—a farewell laden with the weight of irretrievable loss.

He seethed with anger at himself for ever having believed that seduction could mask guile. The burning betrayal by the woman who had captured his heart now seemed like a double-edged curse: it had stripped away his success and his honour, leaving him to wrestle with the bitter taste of regret. Internalising all the blame, Dorian could only curse his foolishness, knowing that hindsight would forever echo in the silent corridors of his mind as a harsh reminder of misplaced trust.

With a final thought—a last, fervent hope that his family might someday forgive his errors—Dorian said his goodbye. He departed from the world he once knew, disappearing into the depths of an uncertain horizon with the belief that his absence might at last offer those left behind a sliver of reprieve from the darkness he had befallen. In his departure lay a tragic, resolute acceptance that some chapters of life, no matter how painful, are destined to close, leaving only the echoes of what might have been.

The stark finality of his decision leaves us with a quiet question: can the end of one chapter, however sorrowful, ignite the hesitant promise of a new beginning?
