Write a story set in a culture where everyone believes crows are a sign of impending death.
The Night Bird
“Mama!?” I called through the living room, my voice echoing down the hall like a rock skipping down rivers. I was looking out of the window when I saw a black bird fly through the window. I winced at seeing it. Our family’s culture showed that seeing a black bird would bring bad luck for you and all of your descendants if you wanted to stop the curse you must sacrifice yourself. My mom ran down the hallway at the sound of my crying I was 17 when this happened nine weeks earlier my auntie had killed herself from seeing a bird. A creature they called it. And now I had seen one. My mom explained to me that by 12:00 today I must kill myself because that’s when the curse set In and all my family , and their children would be cursed and us, the holdles would slowly fade. It was 9:00 at night I had four hours left for all my goodbyes. Sooner than I figured it was 11:56 my mom handed me a spoon. I vomited in my mouth I didn’t know it would be that way. Goodbye honey. My mom said and locked me in the bathroom. I never wanted kids anyway. I opened the small window on top of the shower and climbed up. My mom must’ve heard the commotion because she was trying to unlock the door. This window used to be my passage way when I was younger. I hoped I still fat in there, by now my mom had unlocked the door and I was still halfway trying to escape this crazy lady. I pryed myself out of there just in time and slid off the roof and ran. As fast as I could to the police station and soon my mom was arrested. I’m 24 now with 3 kids a husband and I beautiful home my mom has little to no visiting rights. Whatever curse in our culture we had was no match to me. Lucky hodle.
