STORY STARTER
Write a story about the inhabitants of a house over the years.
Perhaps there is a family that passes the property down the generations – perhaps it is swapped between strangers. What are the stories that arise from these interconnected lives?
Neighbor
It’s been a long time
Two years maybe three
From when we were not just kids
But pirates at sea
And we would paint pictures
Paint using chalk
Take turns on my swing
And flood my sandbox
Then we’d climb trees
And make forts in the leaves
Us against the world, it was just you and me
And I can’t recall your face now
But I’ll never forget the sound of your voice
Why did you leave me?
Was it by choice?
It’s been a long time
A million stories may be more
A million nights I’ve cried and I’ve screamed on the floor
But I still think of you when I sit on the roof
When I watch the sunset
And when I wear blue
And when I look at the future – the future is daunting
And I’ve been meaning to tell you, I think your house is haunted
Your dad is always mad, your mom nowhere to be seen
I believe your brother is married
Is the other eighteen?
I remember sledding down the hill
And making candy towers, tire swings – tree houses, and climbing fence fences with barbed wire
Do you ever think of me?
Or have you forgotten, over the two years, maybe three that our memories were lost in?
