i teach them to read

to tie their shoes

to believe the world can be kind

i listen when their voices shake

hold space

for the hurt they bring from home

i mother every child

who walks through my door

as if they were my own

but where is my happiness?

the classroom is full

my womb is empty

and every night

i wonder how a heart

so open

can still be called barren
