COMPETITION PROMPT
Her eyes found mine across the room—and that was the last moment I belonged to myself.
Scarlet Few
Her eyes bled into mine, the way syrup bubbles into submission on a scalding fry pan
The way she walked was a hypnotist’s pocket watch
A stature only hypothetical, anthetical to anything else I’ve found in life
Nothing made sense the way she does, I mean
When I approached her nothing changed, no predilection became void, I only watched with eyes outside of myself as I melted into something new
Something palpable and shapable, a sandcastle amid a rolling tide
I am my own person, skipping across a midnight beach hoping to be swallowed
I imagine the bottom of ocean envelops you, yes, and if I sank there and became whole I would spread around the world with news of her
Like grainy sand encompassing the beach and ocean
I feel much lesser here, and whole, and wholly new, and who knew the hole that grew would find home solely for her
If I told the Reddened woman I’d be anything for you
I bet she’d laugh and wave it off, but know that it’s the truth
So leaves the mist, and becomes the scarlet dew
