Study Partner

Light rain fell from the cloudy sky. Raindrops racing down the window of the local coffee shop I was sitting in. Perched on a seat at the counter top, I clicked my pen repeatedly until I was well aware of how obnoxious the sound was. But I could hardly care about something like that when I’m currently looking back and forth between my leather bound notebook and my laptop that seemed older than I was. Carefully studying and writing down every important piece of information that I read from my device. I push my glasses up the bridge of my nose. Making sure I wasn’t skipping over anything. I was only about halfway through the page when I hear a voice from behind me. I turn around to find a guy with jet black hair and warm brown eyes that have a mischievous glint in them. He was wearing a sports jersey with the number 51 on it and the last name of some player I never heard up

“I see you decided to start without me,”

I roll my eyes in annoyance at boy who was supposed to be my study partner. “Well, Josh, maybe I would have waited for you if you weren’t twenty minutes late,” I snap and turn around to face back to my laptop. Joshua doesn’t say anything, he just sit down in the stool next to me and proceeds to take out a laptop of his own. He opens it up, types in his password, and begins typing away. I turn back to my work thankful that he’s actually working on something. But my peace doesn’t last for long because approximately two minutes later he looks up from his laptop and turns his head in my direction.

“So how has your day been?” He asks putting his elbow on the counter and letting his chin rest on the palm of his hand.

I glance up at him from my notebook with a confused look.

“What?” He asks. “Has nobody ever asked you a question before?”

I sigh and close my notebook “I’ve been asked questions before. I just think that the timing is a little weird.”

“So what? Are you just gonna leave my question unanswered?”

“As much as I would love to answer your completely unnecessary question, I believe that we should just skip the pleasantries, shall we? You and I both know that we’re not here for small talk. If you don’t study there is absolutely no way you are going to get your grade up. And the lower your grades get the longer you have to go without football,”

He nods at me then looks up at the ceiling before answering “So how long is this going to take exactly?”

I just sigh, close my eyes and think to myself, it’ll take a lot longer than I hoped it would be.
