POEM STARTER
Submitted by SmileyGuitar
Write a poem that starts in a cheerful, bright mood, but then reveals underlying anger or bitterness.
Sunny Disposition
The coffee is perfect, the light is so bright,
The birds on the feeder are singing with might.
The sheets are still warm from my perfectly sound sleep,
And all the big promises you couldn't keep
Are just funny memories, filed neatly away.
I'm having, truly, a wonderful day.
I wore the new outfit, the red, sharp design,
The one you once vetoed with a grumpy sign.
I went to that restaurant you claimed was too loud,
And sat with my friends, right in the thick of the crowd.
The life I constructed, the one I now own,
Is easy and charming, perfectly grown.
But the reason I'm smiling, the source of this glow,
Is realizing how little of me you did know.
I see you sometimes, with your new little pet,
The girl who looks desperate to be your asset.
And honestly, honey, it fills me with glee,
To know you replaced me with a cheap copy.
I'm not bitter at all, I'm just terribly amused.
You walked away from the original, slightly confused.
And watching you settle for something so less,
Is the true, hidden sweetness of my current success.
