STORY STARTER
Submitted by Quill To Page
Write a story where people are limited to only three lies in their lifetime.
Is your protagonist about to use up their first, or maybe their last?
Savior
Honesty is valued. Honesty is the truth. Honesty is everything. It is not good to lie, it only brings the worst in people and it certainly does not build relationships as much as it destroys them. Lies are the only sole cause for destruction.
Three lies; use them wisely.
I am reminded of the societal motto every waking day, by friends, family, neighbors. It is not a curse like my foes say, it’s a gift. It’s a gift to know if your “friend” actually likes your outfit or not, it’s a gift to know if the guy you were crushing on actually liked you or only said that to spare your feelings. Why waste your only three lies on silly things? Not unless you’re completely irrational.
I always thought that I was not one to be characterized as irrational. I was practical, dogmatic, paragon. I was perfection—I tried to be. I was made to be.
But, as I stand before fire and ice, wondering which to pick, wondering which would destroy the worlds first. I’ve come to know the secret taste of fire once in my life. It is ire, catharsis, apprehensive. Fire means getting burned. You cannot walk into the line of fire without knowing the pain it will bring first.
Unfortunately for me, I did not know. And I got burned.
I have had a taste of ice to know just as well that it is maddening. It is virulent, vehement, it is deadly.
Disparate, they are. Hot and cold. One can put out the other and vice versa. But, one thing they both share is the destruction that comes with just the touch of a hand. Desire and malleable. Impulsive and wrath.
Which to pick? I do not know.
I, instead, use my last lie, my last take of breath, to say: “You are picking correctly, savior.”
