STORY STARTER

Write a suspenseful scene, in a story of any genre.

You are writing a single scene, so you do not need to provide backstory or outcome, but your characters and plot should still make sense. Consider the elements of suspense, like pace, atmosphere, motivations, and stakes.

A Day’s Nightmare

I was alone. Nobody was home, so I had the house to myself for the weekend since my parents had some odd event to go to that they refused to tell the details of.

I was alone, and I was supposed to be alone for a while. I wasn’t one of those teenagers that immediately threw a party once their parents aren’t around. I didn’t have enough friends to do such a thing, and the ones I did were geeks anyway. Even if I did invite them over it would probably be to study, we were each others’ only friends, honestly.

I was alone, and I was supposed to stay alone. My parents weren’t coming home for another two days, which is why it was odd when sitting in my room, I heard the sound of the garage door opening. My heart rate spiked up and I immediately froze, unsure of what to do. I carefully took my phone from my nightstand and checked my parents’ location. They were still in Melgrove.

My eyes shot up as I heard the garage door close again, and I quickly sprung to text my mum, but wondered, what if whoever was in here had access to our phones? I didn’t have time to think, as I heard heavy footsteps lace the ground floor.

That’s when the feeling of dread came upon me, nobody I knew, nor anyone that had ever come into my house wore such heavy-footed shoes.

I started to panic. I wanted to get up and hide, or somehow run, but I was frozen, too scared to make any noise. I finally snapped out of it and slowly rose out of my bed, being thankful it wasn’t a creaky one. My mind began to swarm with places to hide.

My closet was probably the safest, but it was also very obvious. I couldn’t hide under my bed, nor the bathroom either. Blood rushed to my head and I reached for the window, trying to be quiet but quick at the same time. But I realized that wasn’t efficient so I just kept tugging and pushing at it. I didn’t use my window much, so I had no clue if this would work and I would die here. But better to try than not.

I pushed at my window and it scraped against the windowslid as I pulled it open. I quickly hurried and placed my feet out. I didn’t hear the footsteps, until I heard the sound of them getting faster, and closer. It was only then I realized I didn’t grab my phone, So I reached over to my bed, my fingers grazing it. It was when I finally reached it that my bedroom door slammed open, and a garish, tall man dressed in all black with combat boots walked inside. This is one of the times where I was thankful my room was huge. I grabbed my phone and jumped out of the window, sliding on the roof. I wanted to close it behind me but that was quite difficult since gravity was pulling me down to the ground.

I reached the edge and looked behind me, seeing the man just staring at me. He didn’t make any effort to chase me, or run downstairs to try and catch me from below. He just looked at me. I started to wonder if there were two, but I couldn’t let my imagination instill fear inside of me. I jumped down and landed on my toes on the hot concrete and winced at the tingling feeling that went up my legs. I took a quick glance behind me and saw the same looking man speed-walking towards me and I bolted. I ran to the furthest neighbor’s house and was about to bang on the door when it suddenly opened and a hand pulled me inside.
