Invisible Man

I am the invisible man.

Sure, I could fight crime and fly. But, I was known for being invisible. All the time.

Being invisible had it’s perks—eavesdropping, spying, staring. All done effortlessly. I was the town’s superhero.

But, what I wasn’t informed of when becoming the unsaid superhero, was the pure torture that dragged me down with it.

Her stance is strong, firm. She stands against the wind with fists clenched, her hair blowing away from her face. It revealed her strong features that I, so deeply, admired from afar. Or close-up, depending on a multitude of things.

Her jaw clenches with frustration. “Adelio, show yourself.” She demands against the weather. It echoed in the air, bouncing off every building and car.

I gulp before letting my mind fall. She doesn’t mask her surprise. Her eyes widen in shock, her stance stumbling backwards. She manages to catch herself before I do.

“You’re the invisible man.” She states and I nod, just once. I take a step forward, testing the waters but she places a hand in front of her. I take a step back larger than the step I had taken forward. I felt the pain seeping into my soul.

“That I am.” I scratch the back of my neck awkwardly, unknowing how to approach the situation. Darcella was the girl I had fell in love with—I had been lying to her for four months.

The underlying guilt and shame ate away at my brain, snuggling itself into every nook and cranny.

“Why didn’t you tell me? You blatantly lied to my face, Adelio,” her voice is so soft, so sweet. “Good, you’re saving people and I love that for you. But, you could have told me. I asked and you said you had no clue.” The vague memory wrenches my heart from my chest.

“I had to, Darcy. I have enemies—“ I cannot speak long enough without her cutting me off.

“Stop.” She says strongly and I do. I freeze all movements. My breath hitches, catching in the wintry air before me. A cloud of smoke escapes her lips before she’s suddenly at the edge of the building. I’m on high-alert as I observe every movement.

“I need time to process.” She says over her shoulder.

“Alright, do it with me.” I suggest grimly as I approach her carefully. I don’t listen to her hand gestures when she tries to stop me. Whatever it was she was thinking—planning on doing, I would surrender before it ever happened.

“Are you just going to lie to me again?” She scoffs, her hair blowing east with the wind.

“No—“ I tried to exclaim but she hears none of it before she freefalls off the top of the largest building in town.
