STORY STARTER

Write a story from the perspective of someone living in a van.

What does their life look like?

Dreams In A Van

She sat in the back of her old dodge caravan, the light coming through the edges of her window covers, even though it was night, it wouldn’t get any darker than it was, for she was parked in a Buc-ee’s parking lot.

Pulling out her phone, she laid back against her pillows on the makeshift bed in the back of the van where the back seats had been folded down or removed, and thought about how she’d gotten to this point.

Adriana was twenty, and had dreadfully wanted to escape the confinement of home. Home wasn’t altogether too bad, she loved the comfy little house and her large happy family, but it was restricting.

Papi was traditional. Or in other words, strict. He was extremely overprotective severely limiting her job opportunities, and controlled her every direction and decision, and Mom went along with everything he said.

But Adriana wanted something more. She wanted to make something of herself, get on her own two feet. Get a job, make connections, find her purpose.

But it was harder than she’d anticipated.

She’d gotten a job at a grocery store, but didn’t have enough money saved up for an apartment. And so here she was. Sleeping in the only thing she could sleep in. Her van.

The one her grandpa had given her. — not out of sympathy, but out of charity.

That feeling hurt. Knowing that all you were to your grandpa was a charity case. All because your mother hadn’t fulfilled his wishes and married a rich white guy.

She’d show them.

Show grandpa that someone could make something of themselves from nothing. She wouldn’t take handouts either.

She’d show Papi that she was a strong capable girl, able to take care of herself.

And she’d show herself that she’d made the right decision to move out of her house and into the van.

Because right now, she couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.

But she didn’t give up. And one day, she hoped she’d be able to thank herslef.

Not really well written, I’m tired after a long day of work, and wrote this instead of going to bed.
