WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a short story or paragraph in passive voice only.

The passive voice places emphasis on the thing rather than the person doing the thing: e.g. “The book was read” rather than “She read the book”.

The Amulet Of Vita

Long ago, in a time much different from the present. There was a world where there were two powerful kingdoms that, while ruled differently, were cordial to one another. With lands that had lush fields and forests, and bellies that never went hungry; for its kingdoms took care of the people.

One kingdom, with a long lineage of elves who seemed to never grow old, was very powerful and respected the lands on which they built their empire upon. The Kharenth Kingdom was known to be kind and fair. Outsiders were welcomed to visit, and encouraged to stay. As the Kingdom’s population grew, so did its city and residing towns nearby.

The royal Kharenth family was known to be soft-spoken and held an immeasurable beauty. While it is true, yes all elves were known to be beautiful, the Kharenth’s were irresistible and bewitchingly divine. The family was  known to possess powers that were given by their deities that they worshipped. They worshipped them for the land, for the food, and for the resources.

The other kingdom, ruled with harsher laws, but was regarded in high esteem, for they had a powerful army. While this kingdom was ruled by mere mortals, they were known to be quite clever in their endeavors of creating technologies. Their technologies would improve their army, by crafting unique weapons and defensive devices. They also were able to find a way to improve their farms in order to make their lands more profitable.

The royal family, who can no longer be named, has been long forgotten in the present time. Their era was unfortunately short-lived and their names have been buried under the rubble that was once known as their kingdom. It is unknown where the kingdom once stood, but its technologies have been adapted into today’s time.

When the mortal kingdom fell from powerful beings  and their people were forced to flee their homes, a hero arose from the fog of hopelessness, and saved the people of the continent Vornesh.

Zephlaria Kharenth, was given a blessing from the gods to defeat the foe that was presented to her. It is said that she was given an amulet by the god of life, Vita, which granted her the power to manipulate the elements of the Earth. With time and practice, she was able to control earth, fire, wind, water, and lightning. With Zephlaria’s new powers she was able to successfully defeat her enemies and save the people and their lands. The amount of power Zephlaria has channeled to win is said to have broken the magical amulet she was once given. However, with such strength and power being wielded, it is said to have cost her life.

It is unknown if she died shortly after the battle, or if she succumbed years later. In books, it is told that due to her great sacrifice, the gods had granted her family to be able to wield the same elements that she did, and pass it along to their children and heirs. While her descendants can not wield all elements as she had, they possess one of the four main elements; earth, fire, wind, and water.

As time has passed, and people have become greedy for power, it is said that Zephlaria’s amulet was not truly destroyed. That it is being kept by someone who dares not to inform the country that such a powerful amulet still exists to this day. Greed would surely corrupt the minds of people as they searched every corner of Vornesh. Thus, the amulet is documented to be destroyed, and is warned that if anyone miraculously possesses it, they will be exiled from the lands.
