WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Frankie Famighetti

Create a conversation that takes place within a human body.

It can be between cells, organs, or anything real or imagined within the body.

Hiccups.

The lungs were getting annoyed.

“Diaphragm! Stop that!”

The diaphragm seized again, “I can’t help it! Just hold your *hic* breath again!”

Lungs frowned. “Hiccups are annoying enough as *hic* it is, if I hold my breath the human might get dizzy.”

There was a tense silence as the hiccuping continued.

“J- *hic* - Just give me a minute, lungs. I need to relax.”

Lungs took in a sharp breath.

“Relax!? It’s been twenty minutes! *hic* the brain is getting annoyed! I’m exhau- *hic* exhaus- *hic* EXHAUSTED! *hic*”

“Calm down. *hic.* you’re making it worse. Tell the brain to get *hic* some water and sip it.” The diaphragm said raggedly.

“Hmpf.” The lungs could’ve rolled it eyes but is didn’t have any. “Fine.”

“You know, it is the stomachs fault, really. It drank too fast.”

“No, this is your fault. I was fine with a bit of nausea from drinking water so fast in the heat, but then you got involved.”

“Hey!” Diaphragm exclaimed.

“It’s true! Sometimes you spasm even when the human hasn’t drank or eaten, or in the middle of the night! Don’t blame the stomach for any of this.”

“I’m just trying to tell you-“

“What? It’s involuntary? That’s your excuse every time this happens.”

“No! The hiccups have stopped.” The diaphragm declares, relaxing.

“Oh.” The lungs stretch. “About time.”
