Cast Out
The wind blew mournfully by the old Monastery. Its marble spires rose up hundreds of feet in the air. Keldur tapped his pencil on the desk, completely zoned out as he stared out the huge floor to ceiling window. Far below the cliffs of Calmorien foamy waves crashed against jagged rocks framing a white beach. Seated at the back of the room, Keldur hoped to escape the notice of the old monk. With a shining bald head and yellow robe swishing by his feet, The monk read aloud from a scroll. His dull voice never rose or fell, always maintaining the same lifeless tone. Keldur could hear him speaking but paid no attention. It would be easy to catch up later as the lesson was on the same topic every day. Still staring at the waves, he wondered what could be beyond the hazy grey line on the horizon. _Maybe there is a whole other world across the sea, just waiting to be found, _He pondered while sketching an outline of the waves.
¨Keldur.¨
He flinched.
¨Perhaps the sea will teach you the Third Oath, since you cleary find it more interesting than my lesson.¨
A few of the other boys snickered but Keldur still didn't look up from his drawing.
¨Maybe it would,¨ he muttered, sinking further into his chair. The monk however, did not hear him. He snatched the notebook off of Keldur´s desk and tucked it into one of his many pockets. The monk walked stiffly back to the front and continued reading. Keldur glared at his back, wishing to disappear.
**…**
_Finally! _Keldur thought to himself when the old monk looked out the window and declared class to be over. Grabbing his books, he stood and waited for the last boy to cross in front of him. Just as he turned to walk out a sharp, ¨Keldur.¨ came from the other side of the room.
He stood still for a moment, watching the last of the boys shuffle out. Then, with a sigh, he went to the old monk's desk.
¨I had hoped this day wouldn't come. That you would forget your daydreams and step into the order as your father did.¨ The monk sighed, dragging his wrinkly, weathered hands across his face. ¨I am disappointed, Keldur, that you haven't been living up to your father´s name.¨ As Keldur looked into the monk's eyes, he saw a deep sadness. Keldur took a deep breath, dreading whatever the monk might say next.
¨I truly am sorry, Keldur, but you have given us no choice. You are being cast out of the order.¨ He handed him a scroll saying, ¨Your father will be informed within the week.¨
Keldur looked down, his hand reached out and took it, but his mind could not comprehend what was happening. There was only one thought in his head. _Cast out! What will father say? A better question, what will he _**_do_**_? _His throat tightened as a lump settled in it firmly.
