In a dystopian, futuristic society, those in power long ago began to see human emotion as a burden, a hindrance, a disruption to their operations and profits. So, they did what anyone would do in such a predicament. They found a way to turn it off. People are much better employees, much more complicit, without distractions like sadness, anger, excitement.

Fallon Rivers just barely remembers the importance of emotions. She used to feel them, unlike most of her peers. That was until, after 8 years of staying hidden, her family was found. She hardly remembers her family now, just that they were full of love and looked sort of like her. She doesn’t miss them because they took that ability away from her. She doesn’t feel anything.

However, somewhere deep in her body, she knows she should miss them. She should be angry that they were ripped away from her. She should be vengeful. She should be filled with rage.

And so, she is.
